More from MONSTERS

Monsters  (UK-2010; dir. Gareth Edwards) -- the much-touted giant monsters indie film -- is due for theatrical release in the US in October. Check out previous information on it on Undead Brainspasm and Undead Backbrain. Its realistic approach of an alien infestation looks positively infectious.

Some new clips that expand on elements within the official trailer have come to light.

More from Monsters

Monsters (UK-2010; dir. Gareth Edwards) comes to cinemas in the US (October 19) and UK (November 12). Australia? Who knows? Madman Entertainment might. They have the rights, so it's very likely. The film did screen recently at the Melbourne Film Festival.

Here's the new poster:

Monsters takes a "realistic" approach to the giant monster genre, and as such looks like it's definitely worth watching. At the very least I'll be hanging out for the DVD. It reportedly cost only US$15,000 to make.

Synopsis:
Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America.

Soon after, new life forms began to appear there and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures"...

Our story begins when a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

You can check out the trailer for the movie as well as other posters, plus there's links to earlier articles featured on Undead Backbrain and Undead Brainspasm here.

Tiny Toothy Terrors

Back in August last year Undead Backbrain introduced you to the unique blend of Chihuahua and Piranha that is Chihuanhas (US-2010; dir. Jim L. Clark).

Somehow that ridiculous idea rang a very loud bell with monster film fans across the Web, and now we're all hanging out for the final result.

Brief update: Sector 7

Information on Je-gyun Yun's ongoing Sector 7 production has been sadly lacking. As a filler, Flix Unlimited provides slightly more detail on the plot and the nature of the monsters:
“Sector 7” is about an oil platform in the middle of the ocean that is attacked by a mutant monster. The monster is believed to have come from a strange virus. As the monster emerges, the people on the oil platform do what they can to save themselves.
Apparently negotiations with "US producers" into possible funding arrangements are ongoing. Je-gyun Yun, whose previous film -- the tsunami disaster epic Haeundae (South Korea-2009; dir. Je-gyun Yun) -- was a huge success, particularly in its home country, is working on the script.

The Rock, Gator Gal and the Snow Monster

No-budget trash-film maniac David "The Rock" Nelson premiered his latest film, Gator Gal [aka Alligator Woman, Gator Girl], on Chicago's WGNTV News this past Halloween. It was received, as always, with great enthusiasm by Rock's local fans:

(For the sake of completeness, here's an early promo he rang in to the station promoting his Halloween preview and trying to find a "voluptuous woman" to play Gator Gal pre-transformation.)

I have no idea if "The Rock" ever found his starlet, but the latest development comes via the world of wrestling:

So it seems that Nelson -- who plays Gator Gal himself -- has been attacking Chicago All-Star Wrestling champs! Below are snaps of Gator Gal with James "Lord Wellington" and "The German SUPAman"!

"The Rock" wanted to thank James "Lord Wellington" for sending him the pictures.

As a bonus for the long-suffering readers of Undead Brainspasm, we now offer a preview of an even more recent horror epic by  David "The Rock" Nelson, aired on WGNTV's Voicemail program on 9 December:

Message from "The Rock":
Until next time, my "Fiends", have a "Spooky-Fun" week, weekend & beyond, enjoy some good, ol' Monster movies, with some "munchies", "'Monster' Soda", "Java", or your drink of choice, & have a good, ol' time! Your "Fiend", "Rock"! David "The Rock" Nelson, "The Ed Wood of the Future ... & Beyond That, Even", -- & "dang" proud of it! "Yah, hah, heh"!

Update on Alien Grey: Zone-X

A restricted research area designated Zone-X -- reminiscent of the legendary Area 51 perhaps -- spawns aliens, alien-reengineered dinosaurs and invasive conspiracies. This is the premise of the independent scifi flick Alien Grey: Zone-X (US; dir. Thomas R. Dickens), which Undead Backbrain reported on a while back.

Director Dickens has dropped by to supply us with a new snapshot of one of the alien greys, just to keep things rolling.

Dickens reports:
The only thing new on AGZ-X is that I am continuing forward with the "Reptile Attack" section.  It is still in post-production.  It is looking great, but still a few shots to do.  The above is an image of an Orion Grey in the film, at the end of the Reptile Attack Sequence.  It looks a little goofy but is based on actual sightings.

Part of the film (65 minutes of an anticipated 120 minutes) has screened at the New York International Film and Video Festival,  where it gained awards for Best Actor, Best SFX and Best Film.

Here's the director being interviewed:

Update: Sherlock Holmes vs the Monsters

Up until a few moments ago, I was wondering what sort of "enormous monsters" the great detective Sherlock Holmes would be up against in The Asylum's in-production fantasy film -- Sherlock Holmes (US-2010; dir. Rachel Goldenberg).

Synopsis:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective faces the ultimate challenge when enormous monsters attack London.
Now we know!

Update: Serpent Lake - New Trailer!

Remember the ultra-low-budget independent lake monster/good ol' boys horror comedy that Kaiju Search-Robot Avery has been following -- Serpent Lake (US-2009; dir. Joel Trujillo)?

Well, director Trujillo has sent along this latest trailer, which ups the ante on the monster's size and experiments with CGI to a much greater extent. Not too bad for a first attempt. Remember this is no-budget filmmaking...

Update: Sacrifice

While there's been no visual sighting of the giant monster involved, Bob Nelson's in-development monster film Sacrifice is apparently stomping along in fine style. Tomorrow, on the film's website, there will be an open live chat on the movie's progress, where you can ask the questions that are preying on your mind.

Meanwhile Kaiju Search-Robot Avery reports that the first official teaser poster has been "leaked" to him, and here it is:

The poster will be available for purchasing from the site.

At the same time, Brick Cave Media is releasing a new story, "Origins", which reveals the monster's backstory. It will be available for purchase -- or comes free with the poster.

As if that's not enough, a short (5 minute) film called "Convention" (Bob is keen on single-word titles obviously) will also debut on the night. It's a spoof of the "Sacrifice" crew's struggles to get their film made.

So roll up and Sacrifice yourself to the excitement.

FInally, Outlander arrives

Well, Outlander finally arrives -- in the US anyway. After speculation that a cinema release would not be forthcoming, Quiet Earth reveals that the alien monster vs vikings creature feature opens in select theatres in the US on 23 January. You can find a list of cities in which it will be showing here.

What's more, below is the final poster:

This film has been long in coming and, despite massive enthusiasm from genre fans and many positive reviews, it appears the Weinstein Company still isn't granting it a big release. I'm sure we here in the Land of Oz will have to wait for the DVD.

Outlander (US-2008; dir. Howard McCain)
During the reign of the Vikings, Kainan (Caviezel), a man from a far-off world, crash lands on Earth, bringing with him an alien predator known as the Moorwen. Though both man and monster are seeking revenge for violence committed against them, Kainan leads the alliance to kill the Moorwen by fusing his advanced technology with the Viking's Iron Age weaponry.
The film stars James Caviezel, Ron Perlman, John Hurt, Sophia Myles, and Jack Huston, if you were wondering. Fairly impressive cast, actually.

For more information, including the trailer, here and here and... oh, do a search on the Undead Backbrain site.

New: Land of the Lost

A teaser poster for an upcoming big-screen dino epic has been released. In the current tradition of doing nothing new, this film is based on the old TV series, Land of the Lost. Click on the image below to look right down the inevitable T-Rex's gullet.

Land of the Lost (US-2009; dir. Brad Silberling), starring Will Ferrell as Park Ranger Rick Marshall. There are a couple of kids, lots of dinosaurs and other creatures, and the bad sentient lizard folk, the Sleestaks.
A forest ranger along with his two children inadvertently stumble into a mysterious land populated by dinosaurs and other creatures, including the mysterious and dangerous race of Sleestak.
Here is what the Sleestaks look like in the new film:

It's due to open on 5 June 2009 in the US.
