The Insects Are Getting Closer...

Undead Backbrain first heard of Pesticide (US-2009; dir. Pat Cerrato) back in October 2008 when Kaiju Search-Robot Avery happened upon a casting call looking for actors willing to get chased and eaten by giant insects: "Wanted! People To Get Eaten By Bugs". Since then we've seen the following "rough cut" trailer:

And Undead Backbrain posted some production pics here.

Now, the director, Pat Cerrato, has sent us a rough cut of the title sequence -- all 4 seconds of it. Watch carefully...

Creepie crawlie, eh? We're told the insects get much much bigger....

The Infestation Begins

Giant-sized insects swarming. And there's not enough bug spray in the world to deal with them. Infestation (US-2009; dir. Kyle Rankin) premieres 8 August on SyFy in the US, and on DVD in October.

Synopsis:
Our hero, Cooper, awakes to find himself nauseous, weak and covered in webbing, hanging from the ceiling of an office where, just minutes ago, he started his new job. As he struggles out of his slimy prison he comes face to face with his opponent - a grotesque, powerful and very angry bug. All 3 ft of it. And so begins a hideous, nail-biting, comedic, all-action adventure to find a safe haven while constantly outwitting an infestation of monstrous proportions. As Cooper embarks on his journey, he befriends a ragtag group of survivors including Sara, a feisty attractive female. Although the situation is dire, Cooper can't help himself from trying to solve his dating problem while trying to save his life. Will they make it to safety before they are picked off one by one? And what other surprises are in store for our group of unlikely heroes? (IMDb)
Below there's a bunch of pictures, mostly featuring star Chris Marquette with his mouth open. No giant insects unfortunately, mouths open or otherwise.

This one actually looks pretty good, despite the inevitable comedic approach. Check out the trailer on Undead Brainspasm.

Incidentally, is that tennis racket Marquette is holding in the poster above the US version of Simon Pegg's cricket bat? Shaun of the Dead was a zomromcom -- and this one looks like an insectromcom. Substitute zombies for insects and the plot sounds very similar. Coincidence?

New: Thoraxx II: The Breeding

In his lifelong pursuit of low-end independent monster flicks, Kaiju Search-Robot Avery happened upon a pair of films, Thoraxx and its sequel, Thoraxx II: The Breeding. It was touted as "the World's First Giant Bug Hillbilly Musical". Inevitably intrigued, he got in touch with one of the directors, Jason Butler, and asked him how to get a copy. Jason replied:
Thoraxx II: The Breeding does not have distribution or anything like that. Pretty much the only way to get a copy is to email me! The film was released in 2003, it has a run-time of 100 minutes, and the directors are myself (Jason Butler) and my friend Mark Peaslee. The first Thoraxx has a run time of about ten minutes, was completed in a one-day shoot in April of 1999, and didn't really seem to warrant a trailer. The first Thoraxx is included on the Thoraxx II DVD.

The film is very low-budget, very goofy, and the bugs were mostly made out of things we had laying around. But, it is a musical, and I think it's pretty entertaining. I'll leave it up to you whether the audience for your website would agree.

Since Thoraxx II we've been working on a series of werewolf movies titled Werewolf Cemetery. There will be four films when we're done, totaling about five hours (I'm still working on the editing). It's also largely a comedy, but also an epic tragedy, an action movie, and a black-and-white homage to the great films of the past especially The Wolf Man.

Also we have a film about a really crappy superhero titled The Adventures of the Screaming Ape. Not exactly a giant monster movie although he has a rather monstrous personality.
The Backbrain will be reviewing the Thoraxx films in due course, but in the meantime here's the trailer for Thoraxx II: The Breeding.
